Prophecy of King David
The Bible is composed of writings from approximately 40 different prophets spanning over 1500 years, from 1400 BC to about 90 AD. Although the protagonists of the Bible lived in different periods and experienced different cultures, they all testified about the coming of Christ.
John 5:39 You diligently study the Scriptures …These are the very Scriptures that testify about me.
Through the life of biblical characters, God teaches us how to recognize the Savior prophesied in the Bible. Among all the characters recorded in the Bible, King David plays a major role in this age. The Bible prophesied that after the death of the physical King David, David would appear again to give the promise of salvation to God’s people.
Hosea 3:5 “Afterward the Israelites will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king. They will come trembling to the Lord and to his blessings in the last days.”
The book of Hosea foreshadows that a prophetical King David must appear in the last days, and God’s people must seek him to receive blessing. Then who is the one who comes in the name of David? The prophet Isaiah helps us understand through another prophecy.
The One Who Appears in the Name of King David
Isaiah 9:6-7 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace…He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom.
Isaiah predicted that a child will be born with the title of Mighty God and Everlasting Father. In other words, God the Father, who comes in the flesh, would be born as a son and reign on David’s throne. The one who accomplished this was Jesus, our Savior, who appeared 2,000 years ago.
Luke 1:31-32 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.
Before Jesus’s birth, an angel appeared to Mary and promised that he would receive the throne of David. This means that he appeared as the prophetical King David. The reason Jesus chose to come in the name of David was that the life of King David gives testimony to the ministry of Christ that he would carry out later as our Savior.
Prophetical Relationship between King David and Jesus
When examining the life of the physical King David we can find similarities between the life of David and that of Jesus. It is written that King David reigned for a total of 40 years over God’s people.
2 Samuel 5:4 David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned for forty years.
Just as King David was 30 years old when he began to reign so also Jesus was anointed at the age of 30. To reign biblically means to begin to preach the gospel. So Jesus began to preach his ministry at the age of 30 to fulfill the throne of David.
Luke 3:21-23 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too… and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove… Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry.
Unfortunately, due to much persecution, Jesus’s life was cut short. As it was prophesied in the book of Luke, Jesus preached the gospel for a short period of three years before being crucified.
Luke 13:6 ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any.
The fig tree, which is native to Israel, represented the nation of Israel in this parable. Jesus prophesied that he had come to this fig tree, the nation of Israel, to look for those who believed his gospel. Since Israel rejected the message of salvation, He forewarned that it would face the consequence of rejecting the Savior. Forty years after the crucifixion, the nation of Israel lost its sovereignty, as it was destroyed in war in 70 AD. The Bible states that no prophecy can be left unfulfilled. The fact that Christ Jesus was crucified after three years of preaching his ministry shows that the prophecy of the throne of David is incomplete until the Savior returns.
Hebrews 9:28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
When Jesus appears a second time He must come again as the prophetical King David. Although many await his return at the last moment, to fulfill the reign of David, He must appear as a man in human form.
The Sign of David is the New Covenant
The Bible prophecies that many false prophets and false messiahs will appear in the last days. Consequently, many people are weary of putting their trust in anyone who says, “Christ has come.” However, Christianity is a faith that believes in God who comes in the flesh. At Jesus’ first coming, those who failed to acknowledge that God came in the flesh, rejected the Savior and even crucified him. Learning from history, when the Savior comes a second time, we must not reject Him as they did at Jesus’ first coming. Then, how can we recognize the true Christ when he comes? There is an ultimate sign by which we can recognize the prophetical David who appears in the last days.
Isaiah 55:3 Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David.
God promised that he would make an everlasting covenant with David. This everlasting covenant is the sign by which we can recognize the prophetical King David. The everlasting covenant is the new covenant established by Jesus.
Hebrews 13:20 Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep.
The eternal covenant mentioned above is the everlasting covenant established by the blood of the sacrifice of Christ. Through this covenant God allows even the dead to be raised to life. In other words, he gives the promise of eternal life through the eternal covenant, the New Covenant Passover.
Luke 22:20 … This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
Jesus established the New Covenant by his blood of sacrifice and offered it to us and there’s a bread and wine ceremony of the Passover. Therefore, the Passover of the New Covenant is the sign of David.
The Prophecy of King David is Fulfilled
There is one who has come with the sign of David in these last days. According to the prophecies, the one who comes with the Passover of the New Covenant is the One who can forgive us of our sins and grant us eternal life. The prophecy of King David stated that Christ must appear a second time to fulfill the reign of the throne of David. Since King David reigned for 40 years, but Jesus only fulfilled three years, Christ must preach his ministry for the remaining 37 years to complete the reign of David. The one who has appeared according to this prophecy is Christ Ahnsahnghong. Christ Ahnsahnghong was born in 1918 and baptized at the age of 30 in 1948. As predicted, Ahnsahnghong appeared at the rebirth of the fig tree, the nation of Israel. Since Jesus said that Israel would be destroyed as a sign of rejecting the Savior, so also the rebirth of Israel is the sign that Christ has returned. Christ Ahnsahnghong restored the Passover of the New Covenant that had not been kept for 1,600 years since His first coming. He preached the sign of David for 37 years to let believers know that He is God who came in the flesh a second time.
